Song Adopted by Cain’s Campaign Also Aims to Be a Tea Party Anthem

By Edward Wyatt, The New York Times

HARRIMAN, Tenn. — If the Tea Party had a theme song, it would be written in the key of common people crying out for accountability. It might rail against the hypocrisy of elites who lecture others about tolerance. It would chastise politicians who stuff their pockets while refusing to listen to those who elected them.

It would, in short, be something like “I Am America,” an anti-establishment anthem recorded 18 months ago by Krista Branch and written by her husband, Michael. She has performed the song at Glenn Beck rallies, on Fox News shows and at several Tea Party events, including one on Saturday for Herman Cain, a Republican presidential candidate, who a few months ago adopted the song for a campaign that is now receiving intense attention as he surges in recent polls.

“The first time I heard that song, the message was so right-on I felt goose bumps just listening to it,” Mr. Cain said in an interview after the campaign rally on Saturday that drew several hundred supporters to this town in eastern Tennessee. “It captured this whole citizen’s movement that a lot of people were — and some still are — in denial of,” he said.

The song is gaining additional attention as the spotlight on Mr. Cain intensifies. Like the Tea Party itself, the song was born out of frustration with politics as usual, and out of personal hardship and a burning desire for self-sufficiency that has changed the lives of the people behind it.

  1. Cain is not able. He is establishment to the core and not tea party. He defends the federal reserve and his simplistic plan is ridiculous in achieving any success. It will hurt seniors and decrease the total revenue. He does not discuss ending the wars. He does not discuss sound money and is ignorant of all the shenanigans that the federal reserve is involved in. He is more of the same. Issues in the US can no longer be fixed, they are way out of control. Ron Paul is the only one with real solid answers as to how we should proceed and how we can save money, trade in peace with other countries and establish a sound currency. My vote stands with him and only him.

  3. Cain has flip-flopped on many issues. His support of TARP and the bailouts as well as talking down to anybody who questions the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve have marked him as someone who will does not understand why our economy is a wreck. Reshuffling and restructuring the tax system isn’t going to repair the core problem of horrible government overspending, bailing out enormous bad investments as well as continuing to prop up the unsustainable social welfare system. He is likable but will never address the real problems.

What has happened to the Tea Party???

Head of a Federal Reserve Board, and recieving funds from big money is not what the Tea Party was created to endorse.

    • He is not part of the Tea Party. He is just looking for votes, a typical politician doing what ever it takes to win. They need to ban him from the TEA PARTY!

  6. Herman Cain is a shill from the Federal Reserve. He has trivialized those who audit the Fed. He lied to Ron Paul about his stance on auditing the Fed. It seems likely that he does not want the Fed audited, because it would reveal his illicit activities as director of the Fed in Kansas City.

Dear Mr. Cain, What is it that you did, as Director of the Fed in Kansas City, that you don’t want to become known? It’s time for your activities at the Federal Reserve to become known. They might well be revealed in a real audit. What did you do at the Federal Reserve? Not your job title or job description. What policies did you implement? What actions did you undertake? What actions did you carryout? Time to come clean, Mr. Cain. These will come out in an audit, which you have trivialized.

  7. He is as much Tea Party as Rick Perry, meaning nothing about him is Tea Party. It is a media fabrication, don’t buy into it. Be a little suspicious of the 999 plan. It sounds great in that it is simplified, but there is no way any new taxes should be given any credence unless the IRS is dissolved first. How can Cain get rid of the IRS? The President can’t and to run on a platform saying that is what he is going to do is just not being genuine or credible. Therefore, look at the man’s history and what else he believes in before you decide who you are voting for. Mine will be for Ron Paul.
