Taking multi-vitamin pills ‘does nothing for our health’

By Daily Mail Reporter

They are a daily essential for millions of Britons hoping to ward off ill-health.

But despite the millions of pounds spent on vitamin pills, they do nothing for our health, according to a major study.

Researchers spent more than six years following 8,000 people and found that those taking supplements were just as likely to have developed cancer or heart disease as those who took an identical-looking dummy pill.

And when they were questioned on how healthy they felt, there was hardly any difference between the two groups.

Experts said the study – one of the most extensive carried out into vitamin pills – suggested that millions of consumers may be wasting their money on supplements.

Many users fall into the category of the ‘worried well’ – healthy adults who believe the pills will insure them against deadly illnesses – according to Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital in London.

  1. Those like me who take supplements do so because we’ve been through mainline medicine and found it lacking. So when pronouncements like this article are useless. What diet were the subjects in both group eating? What was their medical history? What brand/type of vitamins did they use and at what strength? Were they natural vitamins or artificial vitamins?

I had migraines until a nurse friend suggested potassium might help me. It had helped him with leg cramps, and it was known that potassium also helped some people with migraines. It did help me, and that began my interest in vitamins, minerals, and herbs. The secret to supplements is figuring out what one’s body is lacking that is causing one’s problem. My migraines stopped when I upped my potassium, and no doctor had been able to figure that out. After that I learned that some doctors have training in alternative treatments in addition to mainline medicine, so they can better help their patients. Other doctors sneer at alternative treatments and thus they only have half the answers.

Lance Armstrong will tell anyone who will listen that prescription drugs helped cure his cancer, and I am happy for him. I have been allergic to every pharmaceutical I have ever been prescribed. So I use natural supplements and went from having at lease 5 colds every year to having one cold every 5 years. So no one will ever convince me that dropping mainline medicine and taking up holistic methods was wrong. The freedom promised in our country’s laws should protect the private decisions of each patient to be able to use the type of treatments they want.
